DESCRIPTION:
N-bomb. Dabs. Flakka. Molly. Triple C. It’s almost impossible to keep up with the ever-changing drug trends. Learn about the substances new to the drug scene, their clinical effects, how they’re obtained, how they’re used, how overdoses are treated and how these drugs impact communities. This program will provide up-to-date information on new synthetic drugs of abuse, commonly abused prescription and over-the-counter drugs, marijuana concentrates (including Butane Hash Oil and THC extraction) as well as the resurgence of drugs such as heroin. Alcohol fads and other emerging trends, legislation and drug slang terms will also be discussed.
OBJECTIVES:
Attendees will be able to:
• Cite national and state epidemiology of current drug trends.
• Describe how and why the opiate drug problem has become a growing, nationwide epidemic and given way to a resurgence in heroin.
• Discuss the synthetic drugs of abuse growing in popularity and their mechanism of action, clinical effects and toxicity.
• Identify commonly abused prescription and over-the-counter drugs and the dangers these drugs pose.
• Describe the new ways THC is extracted from marijuana and gaining popularity among marijuana users.
SPEAKER – LINDA KALIN BIO:
Linda Kalin, RN, BS, CSPI, is the Executive Director of the Iowa Poison Control Center. She has over 25 years of experience in clinical toxicology and poison center activities. Linda began her career as an emergency room nurse and in 1989 became Iowa’s first Certified Specialist in Poison Information. She was instrumental in the development of the statewide poison control center established in 2000. She is an adjunct faculty member and preceptor for the University of Iowa and Drake’s College of Pharmacy and was awarded Preceptor of the Year from both pharmacy schools. Linda has served on numerous boards and committees and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, Boys Club of Sioux City and Siouxland CARES About Substance Abuse. She is a frequent lecturer and speaker on topics involving drugs of abuse. Linda has been honored as one of 100 Great Iowa Nurses for 2012.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Nurses, physicians, EMS personnel, pharmacists, social workers, law enforcement and other interested professionals who deal with persons associated with drug use.
CANCELLATIONS:
Cancellations received after Friday, October 21 will receive no refund. Cancellations prior to that time will receive a full refund. Sioux Center Health reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment or other circumstances. In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.
CEU’S:
4 CEU’s for Nursing/4 CEH’s for Social Work/Direct Care Givers and EMS Personnel. Certificates of attendance will be provided to present to respective professional boards for individual approval. Participants must attend the entire program to receive continuing education credit. IBON Provider #23.
