Care and Comfort in Unexpected Places: Sara’s Journey into Motherhood

Sioux Center, IA (August 2026) - Sara Boone planned a home birth to welcome her beautiful baby boy. After 16 hours laboring at home, her birth team made the decision that it was time to head to the hospital. Sara was taken to the Sioux Center Health Labor and Delivery department after an unplanned complication. “Initially, when I was brought to the hospital, I was in severe pain and at 10 centimeters for over an hour not being able to push since my baby was breech and I was absolutely terrified. Given my condition, we went into the operating room right away.” 

Since Sara had planned her birth at home, she did not know what to expect giving birth at the hospital. Shortly after her arrival, Sara knew she was in good hands. “I was immediately surrounded by soft spoken yet confident medical professionals who held my hand and coached my breathing and overall lowered my anxiety and stress response drastically. The physical contact of holding my hand or direct eye contact assured me everything was going to be okay.”

Sara delivered a healthy baby boy. During her time at the hospital, she found comfort in the care she received from the team. “I could probably talk all day about the staff and how blown away I was with their care. Not only did they exceed the baseline of good healthcare expectations, but they blew the morale out of the water.” 

Recovery for Sara felt like something she didn’t expect after such a difficult labor experience. “I am completely convinced I recovered so quickly and did so well after having such a traumatic, unexpected birth twist because the staff caring for me was so nice and made me genuinely laugh and feel happy every day. They took care of my physical health of course, but they really repaired my mindset and mental health after what happened to me. It was a type of caring I don’t know if you can train. It was like all of these people on staff those few days helping me were exactly what I needed to not only make it through but ENJOY my experience.”

Looking back on her experience, Sara says Sioux Center Health gave her the opportunity to recover and start her life into motherhood on her own terms.

“The staff there during and after the birth of my baby took care of both of us, of course, but they offered privacy across the board and truly cared about what I needed or wanted in each scenario that popped up - which could have been breastfeeding, going to the bathroom, walking after surgery, or many other things. The staff were involved and helped as much as I wanted them to, aside from doing what was needed to fulfill the health of you and your baby. It was not overbearing or overwhelming having people there I didn't know.”

Sara was extremely grateful to the team for helping her and had a change of mindset after her birth. “I surprised myself that I actually found comfort in the medical team’s presence and loved their help and advice. I have never felt so safe and cared for in my life. It completely changed my outlook on hospitals and taught me you can still do it your way and be safe at the hospital in case something does come up.”
