Allergies can affect anyone and often stem from a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Living in the Midwest—an area known for high pollen levels and other environmental allergens—can make managing symptoms even more difficult.
Don’t wait to find relief: Dr. De Jong, Sioux Center Health Family Medicine Physician, offers allergy testing to help identify your specific triggers.
Dr. De Jong offers prick tests for allergy testing, also known as a skin prick test (SPT). In this test, a small amount of allergen is placed on the skin, typically on the forearm or back, and then the skin is lightly pricked with a needle. This allows the allergen to enter just below the skin’s surface. If you're allergic to the substance, a small raised bump (similar to a mosquito bite) will appear.
The prick test can detect a wide range of seasonal allergens, including but not limited to pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. It can also identify allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and mold. Additionally, the test can be used to screen for various food allergens.
The actual procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes. After the allergens are applied and the skin pricked, you will typically wait another 15 to 20 minutes to allow your skin to react.
A follow-up test called intradermal skin testing may or may not be done. This test is also 15-20 minutes.
In fertile, agricultural areas like the Midwest, allergies are common because the environment is full of things that can trigger allergic reactions. These regions have lots of crops, like corn and soybeans, which release pollen into the air. The farming activities also stir up dust and mold, especially during harvest time.
Additionally, the soil and plants in these areas can produce more allergens, and the abundance of animals on farms adds to things like pet dander and animal hair. All of these allergens combined make it more likely for people living in these regions to experience allergy symptoms.
Before your allergy test appointment, our nursing staff will follow up with you about your medications. Certain medications, especially antihistamines and some other allergy medications, can interfere with the results of a prick test. It's usually recommended to stop taking these medications for several days before the test. Be sure to follow your primary care provider's instructions regarding medication use prior to testing.
A runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing happen when the lining of your sinuses becomes irritated. This is a common sign of allergies, known as allergic rhinitis.
Asthma and eczema can also be symptoms of allergies.
Children can be allergy tested at Sioux Center Health beginning at three years old. Allergies can greatly affect a child's sleep, school attendance, outdoor sports enjoyment, and overall well-being. Identifying and managing allergens is key to improving their quality of life.
Allergy testing helps pinpoint potential triggers, allowing you to create a plan to avoid or manage them, reduce the risk of severe reactions, and enhance their health and well-being - for school, sports, and life.
The prick test is generally very safe. Some people might experience mild redness, swelling, or itching at the test site, which is a normal reaction. Rarely, more severe reactions, such as anaphylaxis, can occur, but these are extremely rare. Since the test is done at Sioux Center Health, emergency care can be provided if needed.
Allergy treatment involves avoiding allergens, using medications like antihistamines and nasal sprays, and undergoing immunotherapy (allergy shots or drops).
Allergy drops can be effective for people with pollen, dust mite, or pet allergies and offer the convenience of home treatment.
It does take time (generally, 3-5 years) to see significant improvements, and effectiveness varies by individual. For those who find allergy shots inconvenient, drops can be a good alternative to reduce symptoms over time.
Fortunately, there's little wait time involved!
Dr. De Jong will review your results with you at the end of your appointment and guide you through a recommended treatment plan.
