Dr. David Janssen Receives Iowa Family Physician of the Year Award

Des Moines, Iowa: Dr. David Janssen, a dedicated family physician from Sioux Center, has been honored as the 2025-2026 Iowa Family Physician of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. The award was presented during the installation and awards ceremony held on November 7 at Prairie Meadows Event Center.

The Iowa Family Physician of the Year award recognizes one outstanding physician who exemplifies the tradition of the family doctor and upholds the highest standards of family medicine.

Dr. Janssen graduated from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed his residency at Quad Cities Genesis in Davenport. He currently serves the Sioux Center community, providing comprehensive care for patients of all ages at his small-town critical access hospital, Sioux Center Health. He also serves as an OB provider and contributes to the Siouxland Memory Center.

In a nomination letter from a patient, Dr. Janssen was described as having “infectious energy and a ready sense of humor,” making him a favorite among patients and staff alike. Beyond medicine, he brings the same passion to the arts—directing musical productions, performing in improv shows, and singing in community events. His skill, energy, and dedication embody the true spirit of family medicine and community service.

Family physicians like Dr. Janssen complete extensive training beyond medical school, including a three-year residency that provides comprehensive education across multiple specialties—pediatrics, geriatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, and community medicine. This breadth of training equips them to care for patients at every stage of life.

The Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, representing over 1,600 members, is a constituent chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, which is one of the largest medical specialty societies in the United States with a membership of more than 129,000 family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students.
