Click below to learn recommended women's health screenings by age group, or schedule a well-woman exam with your primary care provider. At this exam, you may ask questions on topics like your menstrual cycle, family health history, pregnancy planning and menopause.
Starting at age 21, it’s recommended to have a Pap test every three years. This simple screening checks for abnormal cells on the cervix that could develop into cervical cancer. At this age, HPV testing is generally not needed unless your Pap results are abnormal. If any abnormalities are found, we will provide closer follow-up and monitoring.
It's important to note that most HPV infections are harmless and clear up on their own. However, high-risk HPV types can lead to cervical cancer, anal cancer, or other health problems.
Starting at age 30, you have two options for cervical cancer screening. You can either continue with a Pap test every three years or choose co-testing — a combination of a Pap test and an HPV test — every five years.
Co-testing is more comprehensive and allows for a longer interval between screenings if results are normal. If any abnormalities are detected, we will provide closer follow-up and monitoring to ensure your continued health.
At age 40, it’s recommended to begin annual mammograms, as breast cancer is most treatable when detected early. Yearly screening can identify tumors before they’re felt or cause symptoms. Some women find it helpful to schedule their mammogram during their birthday month as a yearly reminder. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, your doctor may recommend starting earlier or screening more frequently.
Colorectal cancer often develops without early symptoms, making regular screening essential. Beginning at age 45, a colonoscopy every 10 years is the gold standard for detecting and removing precancerous polyps.
If you have a family history or previous polyps, your doctor may recommend screening earlier or screening more often. If you have no family history and no prior polyps, Cologuard — a stool-based test — may be an option every three years if results are negative. Speak with your provider to choose the best screening option for you.
At age 65, your doctor may recommend a bone density test to screen for osteoporosis. This is also an important time to review your ongoing need for mammograms and colon cancer screenings.
Your screening schedule may vary based on your medical history and current risk factors. In some cases, earlier screening for osteoporosis or adjustments to medications that support bone health may be recommended to help prevent complications.
Regular screenings and examinations for women can help prevent or catch concerns, such as cancer and diseases, in the earliest and most treatable stages.
Screenings can vary based on your needs so be sure to talk to your provider to know what works best for you and your body.

Sioux Center Health encourages patients to know their breast health. When women are more aware of what healthy breast tissues feels like, they are also more likely to notice subtle changes. Increased familiarity makes it easier to see anything abnormal early on when treatment is the most effective.
Your family medicine physician can address breast concerns during your visit. They can also provide a referral for advanced imaging or refer you to surgery for help with conditions such as cysts, lumps and tumors.
From prenatal to labor & delivery and postpartum, your pregnancy journey with Sioux Center Health will involve individual attention from your skilled and compassionate obstetrician (OB physician).
At Sioux Center Health, we offer the best care possible to help you stay healthy for you and your baby. This can include well visits before conception, prenatal checkups and delivery.
Aging throughout a lifetime takes strength and resilience during the many transitions and transformations. While men also experience hormonal changes as they age, there are massive differences in women.
