Sioux Center Health Welcomes New Family Medicine Physician/Obstetrics

Sioux County native Dr. David Janssen hopes to brush up on his Dutch bingo before his start date in Sept. “Being from Sioux County, having been a patient in Sioux Center, I understand how people
think and I’m excited to get started,” he said. “I’m looking forward to developing those relationships with patients.”

The 29-year-old is a Hospers native and 2007 graduate of MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City. He received degrees in molecular biology and Spanish from Grove City College in Grove City, Pennsylvania, in 2011. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2015. Janssen completed his three-year Family Medicine Residency at the Genesis Family Medicine Residency Program in Davenport in June 2018.

“Sometime in late high school we had to think about careers, what we wanted to do; I knew I liked to help people, give practical advice and be hands on,” Janssen said, noting that becoming a family practice physician encompassed all of that. “Growing up, coming to see Dr. J [former Sioux Center Health doctor Richard Jongewaard], I consider him a role model.” On breaks as an undergraduate student, Janssen shadowed other doctors in Sioux Center, Orange City and Sioux City.

“I found I really liked working with the family doctors,” he said. “They got to be there for the highs and lows of a family and the relationships they had with their patients was amazing. I knew I wanted that.” As part of a rural rotation in his residency program, Janssen worked with Sioux Center Health’s family medicine physicians last December.

“I really thought small town Iowa, specifically Sioux County, is where I wanted to practice and I got a taste of that last winter,” Janssen said. “In a way, it was to feel it out to see if working in my home county would feel strange but it was really enjoyable to run into people with whom I had a connection. I think by being a family practice physician I can just continue to strengthen those relationships.”

Janssen enjoys vegetable gardening, cooking, biking and theater. “I’m excited to be here and get started,” he said.
